My second week at Rice University Has been so grateful most especially in the OEDK(Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen) where we have been doing all our projects and training. The OEDK is a resourceful place for engineering students in who are doing research, prototyping and designing. It has almost all the equipment and materials that enables students to have engineering experience. It has laser cutters ,CNC machines, 3D printers just to mention a few .The other good thing is that the people working in the OEDK are well experienced, friendly , ready to help and professionals.
During this second week we completed our project which we have been working on .We designed a feeding device to be used at Houston zoo, to be used to feed anteaters and we had to go through all the engineering design procedures. After brain storming, we had to come up with a low fidelity prototype which is made up of basic cheap materials , and after coming up with a low fidelity prototype we had to improve our prototype to come up with a medium fidelity prototype and after the project we did presentation of our final prototype. The projects were done in groups, each group came up with a different prototype. The picture below shows the prototypes which my group came up with which is made up of container, straps and maze.
Low fidelity Prototype Medium fidelity prototype
Throughout this project we have been using equipment and resources available at the OEDK, this gave me the opportunity to know and understand the use and safety measures considered when working with the equipment.
During the week we also had a 3D printer workshop which gave me the opportunity to learn more on how to design, print 3D objects and steps to be followed when using 3D printers .Below is a picture of my first 3D print out.
